The Way I work
The main models of therapy underpinning my work are Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). I also incorporate some aspects of Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) and play based approaches with younger children. I have also completed level 1 and 2 training in EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Reprocessing and Desensitisation)
Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy
Transactional Analysis 'is a theory of personality and a systematic psychotherapy for personal growth and personal change' (ITA). It incorporates aspects of humanistic, psychoanalytic and cognitive approaches and aims to help us move toward autonomy and be free from dysfunctional beliefs and patterns of feeling/behaviour established in early life. The philosophy of Transactional Analysis is
1. Everyone is OK
2. Everyone has the capacity to think
3. Everyone has the capacity to change
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
CBT is a talking therapy that focuses on the interplay between your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Often we can become stuck in negative cycles of behaviour or thinking that make us feel anxious, angry or sad. CBT aims to break down these cycles and make new patterns to improve the way you feel. CBT tends to focus on current problems rather than looking at the past.
Solution Focused Brief Therapy
Solution Focused Brief Therapy, as the name would suggest, focuses on solutions rather than being problem lead. It does not ignore distress and difficulties but refocuses on success. Therapy involves discussions and questions that encourage clients to build a picture of their own solutions.
Play based therapy approach
Play based therapy is a form of psychotherapy that allows communication through the natural process of play. It is said that play is to children what verbalisation is to adults. It provides an opportunity to reduce frightening and traumatic experiences, allows expression of buried feelings, gives opportunity to rehearse and reality test situations and promotes emotional, social and cognitive development.
Eye Movement Reprocessing and Desensitisation therapy
EMDR is a type of therapy designed to help individuals to heal from trauma and psychological distress. It has been extensively researched and is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). It aims to help the brain to re-process distressing memories thereby lessening their impact on your emotional wellbeing and everyday functioning. Most of the research has focused on its use in PTSD though it has also been used for a wide range of mental health difficulties including panic, phobias, addictions and anxiety.
